The Literature, Medicine, and Culture Colloquium (LMCC) at UNC will hold our next meeting on Wednesday, October 25 at 5:45pm in UNC’s recently renovated HHIVE Lab, also known as Gaskin Library or Greenlaw 524.

Note: All of our meetings this semester will take place at 5:45pm on the last Wednesday of each month in the HHIVE Lab.

If you can’t attend in person, you can always attend via Zoom at our usual Zoom link: https://unc.zoom.us/j/99228197675. If you have trouble with the Zoom link, please email either of the Co-Directors.

For our October meeting, we’ll be discussing Priscilla Wald’s Contagious: Cultures, Carriers, and the Outbreak Narrative (Duke UP, 2008). Specifically, we’d like everyone to read the following:

  • Introduction (pp.1-28)
  • Ch. 1: “Imagined Immunities: The Epidemiology of Belonging” (pp. 29-67)
  • Optional/suggested reading: Any additional chapter of your choice

All members of the UNC community can access the full text of the book online through the UNC Libraries. We’ve also posted .pdfs of the book’s introduction, first chapter, and end notes onto the “Readings” page of the LMCC website. If you run into trouble getting access to the text, please contact one of the Co-Directors. (See our email addresses on the Home page of this site).

If you have any questions, please contact us directly. Please also feel free to share this info with other graduate or professional students who might be interested! We look forward to meeting with you all for an exciting discussion of this work!
